Google Ads for Tradies and Construction: Target Local Job Leads, Undercut Competitor Costs

Most Australian tradies approach Google Ads like they approach their first renovation quote: they guess, they overspend, and they wonder why they don’t see results.

The builders, plumbers, electricians and concreters winning steady work right now aren’t spending more on ads than their competitors. They’re spending smarter. They understand how Google’s auction works, they know which keywords to bid on, and they’ve figured out how to target job leads before their competitors even show up in the results.

Here’s what separates tradie businesses that succeed with Google Ads from the ones that burn cash and quit after 90 days.

The Google Ads Auction: How Tradies Really Win Work

Google Ads isn’t a first-price auction. The highest bidder doesn’t automatically win the top spot. Google weighs your bid against your quality score, a composite rating built from ad relevance, landing page experience, and expected click through rate. The product of your bid and quality score determines your ad rank, which controls both your ad positions and your actual cost per click.

This means a tradie with a $5 bid and a quality score of 8 will outrank a competitor with a $10 bid and a quality score of 3. Better yet, the tradie with the superior quality score will pay less per click.

A Quality Score of 10 cuts your CPC by up to 50%. A Quality Score of 1 to 3 increases it by up to 400%. That’s not pocket change. If you’re running a $2,000 monthly budget and your quality score is dragging you up to 400% higher CPCs than it should be, you’re leaving thousands of dollars on the table every year.

What Tradies Actually Pay Per Click in Australia

The bad news: there’s no fixed price. Most Australian businesses pay between $1.50 and $6.00 per click, with higher costs in competitive industries. For tradies, the range varies wildly by trade and location.

Tradespeople can expect to pay between AUD 1 to AUD 5 per click, depending on the industry and specific keywords targeted. But that’s just an average. Here’s what the real data shows:

Real CPC Data for Construction Trades in Australia

Residential trade CPCs typically range from $3 to $10. Commercial and civil construction keywords range from $8 to $18. The difference isn’t arbitrary. A traddie searching for “emergency plumber Sydney” competes against dozens of other plumbers. A concretor bidding on “concrete driveway Penrith” faces far less competition.

Capital cities carry higher CPCs because more businesses compete for the same searches. A dentist in Sydney pays roughly double what a dentist in Adelaide pays for the same keyword. Apply that rule to tradies and construction. Sydney searches cost more because more tradie businesses are bidding. Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane offer lower CPCs, but also lower search volumes. Regional areas are cheaper still, but so are client volumes.

The point: you’re not paying a random price. You’re paying what the market will bear for access to customers in that location searching for that specific service. Your job is to bid smart enough to compete without overpaying.

Why High CPCs Aren’t Always Bad

Service businesses with urgent local intent, tradies, mechanics, and medical businesses convert at 11-15%. When someone searches “emergency plumber Sydney” or “dentist open Saturday Parramatta”, they’re ready to book, not browsing. They click ads with their wallet already out.

A $4 click from someone searching “emergency plumber near me” is worth far more than a $0.50 click from someone searching “how to fix a leaky tap”. Only one of those searches turns into a phone call and a job.

The Five Tactics That Cut Your Cost Per Click Immediately

Most tradies don’t have a Google Ads problem. They have a campaign structure problem. Here’s how to fix it.

1. Separate Your Service Types Into Different Campaigns

If you’re a builder running ads for “home renovation Sydney,” “kitchen renovation Sydney,” and “bathroom renovation Sydney” all in the same campaign, Google’s algorithm treats them the same way. It doesn’t know that one converts at 12% and one converts at 4%. It wastes budget equally across all three.

Separate them. Create one campaign for kitchens, one for bathrooms, one for general renovations. Give each its own budget. Let Google optimise each one independently. You’ll see better conversion rates and lower CPCs within 30 days.

2. Target Suburb-Level Keywords, Not City-Level Keywords

The most effective keyword strategy for construction campaigns combines city-level keywords with suburb and region-specific variations. City-level terms generate the most volume but also the most competition. Suburb-level terms are cheaper per click, convert at a higher rate because of the local specificity, and are often ignored by competitors focused only on broad city terms.

Don’t bid on “plumber Sydney.” Bid on “plumber Manly,” “plumber Bondi,” “plumber Parramatta.” You’ll find more customers per dollar spent.

3. Use Phrase Match and Exact Match, Not Broad Match

In a mid-sized market like Adelaide (and every Australian city), broad match wastes budget quickly on irrelevant searches. Review your search terms report weekly in the first month to identify both new keyword opportunities and negatives that need adding.

Broad match is Google’s way of saying “we’ll show your ad for anything we think is related.” That means a plumber bidding on “emergency plumber Parramatta” might pay for a click on “plumbing courses Parramatta” or “plumbing jobs Parramatta” because Google thinks it’s close enough. It’s not.

Phrase match (“emergency plumber Parramatta”) only shows your ad when someone searches those words in that order. Exact match (“[emergency plumber Parramatta]”) only shows your ad for that exact search. Both cost less and convert more than broad match.

4. Build Suburb-Level Landing Pages

Your homepage is not a landing page. Someone searching “emergency electrician Cannington” clicks your ad and lands on a page about your company history and they leave. A dedicated landing page with a clear headline, phone number above the fold, and a form converts at 3 to 5 times the rate.

Create a landing page for each suburb you serve. Put your phone number in huge text above the fold. Add a form if you want, but make the phone call the main action. Add a line or two about your local service, maybe a testimonial from a customer in that suburb. Google rewards pages that match the search intent. If someone searches “electrician Cannington,” they want to see a page that says “electrician Cannington,” not a homepage that makes them hunt for your service area.

5. Start With Manual Bidding, Not Smart Bidding

Smart Bidding (Target CPA, Maximise Conversions) needs at least 30 to 50 conversions per month to function well. Starting them on a new account with zero history means the algorithm guesses badly and wastes budget while learning.

When you launch a Google Ads campaign for the first month, use manual CPC bidding. You control the bid. You’ll see where your budget goes. After 30-60 days of data, you’ll understand what works. Then you can let Google’s Smart Bidding take over with real conversion data to work from.

Quick Wins: Five Actions to Start This Week

  1. Audit your current campaigns. List every campaign, every ad group, and every keyword. If you’re running more than one service type in the same campaign, you’ve found your first money leak.
  2. Create suburb-level keyword lists. Take your current city-level keywords (“plumber Brisbane”) and break them into suburb variations (“plumber South Bank,” “plumber Fortitude Valley,” “plumber Spring Hill”). Add at least 10 suburbs you actively service.
  3. Build one suburb-specific landing page. Pick your strongest suburb. Create a page with that suburb’s name in the headline. Link your ads to it. Track how many phone calls you get from that one page in two weeks. That’s your benchmark.
  4. Set up call tracking. Use a service like Google’s built-in call tracking or Callrail to see exactly which keywords and ads generate phone calls. You’ll discover which suburbs, which services, and which keywords actually convert into jobs.
  5. Review your Quality Score. Log into your Google Ads account. Check the Quality Score column on each keyword. Any keyword with a score below 5 is bleeding money. Add negative keywords aggressively to stop wasting budget on irrelevant searches.

The Real Opportunity Right Now

70% of Australian tradies are still banking on word of mouth as their primary marketing channel. That means 30% of your competitors have already figured out Google Ads. They’re grabbing the job leads that should be yours.

The advantage isn’t permanent. As more tradies move to paid search, CPCs will climb and competition will increase. But right now, if you structure your campaigns smartly, build landing pages that convert, and bid on the right keywords, you can undercut competitors and steal market share at a lower cost per click than you’d pay in 12 months.

The tradies winning the most work in 2026 aren’t the ones with the biggest ad budgets. They’re the ones who bid like they understand how Google’s auction actually works. Start with your campaign structure, move to suburb-level targeting, and let your Quality Score do the heavy lifting. That’s the formula.
